- <p> "I refuse to be an unperson," declared SALMAN RUSHDIE a year
- ago, on the third anniversary of the Iranian death edict against
- him. Still in hiding, the author has made his most defiant refusal
- yet to be an unperson. The media-friendly recluse appeared in
- front of 72,000 people at a U2 concert in London. Lead singer
- BONO called Rushdie from the stage using a phone hooked up to
- loudspeakers. "I can see you now_you are wearing a ridiculous
- gold suit," said Rushdie, who was in the stadium. The writer
- then materialized to greet the Irish rocker. Rushdie's announcement
- that he was unafraid of the crowd had the ring of truth, given
- the slim chance that many radical Muslims are fans of U2.
